Jewelry Care
High-quality jewelry made of 925 sterling silver and 585 gold is durable – with proper care, it will remain beautiful for a lifetime. Here you will find everything you need to know.
Caring for 925 Sterling Silver
Silver oxidizes over time and can tarnish – this is completely normal and not a defect in quality. Here's how to care for it properly:
- Wipe after wearing: Gently wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth – this removes sweat and skin oils before they set.
- Cleaning when tarnished: Use lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap, gently rub with a soft cloth, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry.
- Silver polishing cloth: For stubborn tarnish, use a special silver polishing cloth – available at any drugstore.
- Ultrasonic cleaner: Suitable for smooth silver pieces without stones or enamel.
Caring for 585 Gold (Yellow, Rose & White Gold)
Gold is less prone to oxidation than silver, but still requires some care:
- Clean regularly: Use lukewarm water with mild dish soap, a soft toothbrush for settings and hard-to-reach areas.
- White gold: After years, it may appear slightly yellowish – this is the normal shining through of the gold core. A jeweler can easily re-rhodium plate it.
- Rose gold: The copper alloy makes rose gold a little more sensitive – especially protect it from acids (sweat, citrus).
What you should always avoid
- 🚿 Showering & bathing – water and shampoo attack the surface
- 🏊 Swimming pool & sea – chlorine and saltwater are particularly aggressive
- 🏋️ Sport – sweat greatly accelerates oxidation in silver
- 🧴 Perfume & cream directly on the jewelry – always apply cream/perfume first, then jewelry
- 🧹 Household cleaners – chemical agents can permanently damage the surface
- ⚡ Ultrasonic for jewelry with stones – vibrations can loosen settings
Proper Storage
- Store each piece of jewelry individually in a soft pouch or separate compartment
- Hang necklaces individually or store them laid flat – prevents tangling
- Store in a cool, dry place away from light
- Storing silver in airtight bags significantly slows down tarnishing
